Before You Buy a Used iPhone: What an IMEI Check Really Tells You

EL OUATINE · 2026-10-13

Why is an IMEI check the first step before buying?

Every phone has a unique IMEI number — the device's fingerprint. When you buy a used phone, checking that number tells you the truth the screen won't: is the device clean, or is it hiding a problem that will cost you the whole purchase?

What does the check reveal?

  • iCloud status (FMI): if FMI is ON and an account is linked, the phone can turn into a paperweight after any reset without the original owner's credentials.
  • Carrier lock (SIM Lock): an "Unlocked" device accepts any SIM; a locked one is tied to a single carrier and may need an official unlock service.
  • Blacklist status: devices reported stolen or lost show up here — buying one is a legal and technical risk.
  • The device's true identity: original model, capacity and color — exposing modified or parts-assembled units.
  • Warranty and activation date in full GSX reports.

How to read the result

The ideal result: FMI OFF + Unlocked + Clean. A different element doesn't automatically mean a bad deal — it means you should know the real price and the risk before paying. For example, an FMI ON device at a low price can be a bargain if the owner is present and signs out of their account in front of you.

Try it yourself

Our free IMEI checker gives you the basics; for deep checks (GSX, carrier status) see the check services catalog — the result is delivered in writing, usable as proof in the deal.

The bottom line

The check costs little… the mistake costs the whole phone. Check before you buy, and ask for the result in writing.
